Description: This is one of Cy’s favorite homebrew recipes – the idea was to add a pinch of smoke malt to an IPA recipe, and hop it with 100% New Zealand hops. And that’s just what we did. We used a small amount of Cherrywood smoked malt, and Nelson Sauvin & Moteuka hops to lend the signature fruity character that NZ hops are known for. Tasting Notes: Upon first sniff, you know there’s Nelson hops in this beer with aromas of passionfruit, gooseberry, mango, and starfruit. Then you think, what the hell is that in the background? That’s where the trace amount of smoke comes in. We think it accentuates the NZ hops, and there’s some caramel and toffee notes in the flavor to support this yet again hop forward beer. Amber in color, Smokin’ Kiwi could be considered a red IPA if not for the smoke malt. This cult favorite at the pub likes to consumed with heartier fare, like sirloin & lamb.
