This version of the beer is exclusively brewed in the UK for the J D Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival. Carrying on the tradition of collaborating with overseas brewers at Caledonian Brewery we welcomed Richard Chennells, the master brewer at the Zululand Brewery, in Eshowe, outside Durban, South Africa, to brew Zulu Blonde Export Ale, a unique beer for the JD Wetherspoons March 2012 beer festival, using the tools and know-how of the Caledonian. This is what Richard had to say for his time at Caledonian “It was awesome. Of 42 breweries that used to be in Edinburgh they are the last ones standing and are famous for brewing their Deuchars IPA. Brewing on their modern AND old school equipment was a great experience. Very cool people in Edinburgh too. I reckon this brew is going to be the best yet. Richard studied brewing in America before setting up his micro-brewery in Eshowe, and the only outlet for Zulu Blonde is the George Hotel in the area. Along with running the brewery, Richard was one of the breweries that got involved with the Beer tours in the area, which includes Beer tasting and cycling, golfing or fishing amongst other events and hosting the Wandering Keg, a TV show searching for the best micro-brewery in South Africa.
