Description: For the second year in a row, the brewers of Free State, Blind Tiger and 23rd Street Breweries have collaborated on a release in honor of American Craft Beer Week. Last year’s Full Kimono was a resounding success, and we are hoping that this one will make just as big a splash. Smoke on the Wheat Beer is a Grätzer/Grodziske. This pale-straw colored, 100% Oak-smoke Wheat beer has its origins in Poland, where it was the most popular beer style in that country dating back to the 1400s until the last brewery brewing the style was sold off in the early 90s and the style disappeared. Named after the town of its origin, Grodzisk(Grätz), this beer has a light, but firm smoke character and a slightly tart character from the wheat malt. The neutral yeast strain of Polish origin and a substantial hop addition of the slightly spicy Polish Lublin hop further enhance this exceedingly refreshing light bodied, highly carbonated ale. The palette is light and approachable, despite the challenges in perception some might have with a “smoked beer”. The low starting gravity means that this beer has a low alcohol content, making it the most session-able of beers. Thanks go out to the brewers at Krebs brewing in Krebs, Oklahoma for reviving this style by securing the original yeast strain and petitioning Weyermann Malts of Bamberg, Germany to produce the Oak Smoked Wheat Malt that is the backbone of Smoke on the Wheat Beer.
