Description: Notes: When a local gardener / farmer writes you to ask if you'd like 60 pounds of hardy oranges -- because they might be an interesting substitute for hops -- you say sure. At least we did! Jack Carpenter of Whitsett, NC sold us these tough, cold-tolerant citrus fruit earlier this fall. Brian thought of incorporating them into a kettle sour, adding some twang and building off the tart. The beer pours cloudy with little head, with a lively floral, piney, and citrus aroma. It's a refreshing, wheaty kettle sour, with lacto contributing some funk and twang to the layers of OJ, grapefruit pith, and lemon peel. Incidentally, we don't rely solely on the hardy orange for bittering: the beer includes Citra, Chinook, and Mangum hops.
