Description: Our Gherkinweisse (German pickle wheat beer) has sweet flavors of malt supported by a slight tartness of the fermented pickle. This style originated some 60 miles south of Berlin, Germany where the river Spree splits into 300 little creeks and canals, forming the Spreewald forest, an area of deep black fertile soil, calcium rich river water, and excellent weather providing for quality pickle crops. The Slavic tribe of the Sorbs settled here in the 6th century bringing their cucumber seeds. In 1679 Dutch immigrants, astute in the art of pickling, introduced the gherkin (pickle) into their brewing – hence the Gherkinweisse was born. Rarely made since the 1800s since the true Dutch Gherkins are hard to find, this beer is definitely one to relish.
