Description: This is a beer style that was popular in the Netherlands in the early 1500’s. It has been said to be the predecessor to the European IPA. It is highly hopped with European noble varieties. Although it might not seem like it on first glance it is a hop forward beer but not in the way we are used to now with our big and bold North American hops. European noble varieties give a much softer, subtler hop character. The malt bill is also quite different as the Dutch tended to use high amounts of oats in their beers as it was inexpensive and readily available. This also sets it apart from its more modern counterparts.
