Description: This 7.4% imperial amber ale was brewed as a festival beer for the GABS 2016 beer festival. A very special ale made with a very special ingredient: ambergris – commonly, and somewhat mistakenly, known as ‘whale vomit’. The result is a pungent, animalistic aroma, musky ethereal perfume, full body, caramel malt and fruity flavours, very balanced bitterness. Though the aroma may not be for the faint-hearted, and the beer isn’t exactly vegan-friendly, the ambergris perfume adds another dimension to this unique tasting experience. Ambergris comes from the bowels of a sperm whale and has been a prized commodity, worth almost its weight in gold, used most commonly around the world in the perfume industry. In Medieval times it was used as a flavouring for cooking and to lift the flavour of wines and brandy. Ambergris is understood to be a secretion that forms in the gut of a sperm whale to assist with digestion. It may be regurgitated, excreted, or washed out from a decomposing whale and then typically floats on the oceans curing for decades, the longer the better. We have found a relatively fresh specimen of ambergris on the beaches near Robe and added it to a ramped up version of our Amber ale. Here at Robe Town Brewery, we are really enjoying the flavour of Moby Dick, and are already planning to brew another vintage of it.
