Description: Gose (pronounced “goes-uh”) are tart, salty, wheat ales who’s origins span all the way back to the early 16th century in Northern Germany where it was produced along side its cousin, Berliner Weisse. Both styles get their acidity from lactobacillus, one of our favorite types of bacterium that reduces the pH of its host. This is the same bug that ferments some of our favorite foods like kimchi, pickles, yogurt and salami, not to mention all the beers in our Short Weisse series. Quite the super little bug. The addition of salt and corian- der adds, as you’d suspect, brininess and a hint of herbal spice. These additives also mean that Gose is one of the few historic styles of German beer that fall outside the country’s purity law, Reinheitsgebot. The result is a uniquely refreshing brew that is finally seeing a resurgence in popularity, a popularity that we think is well deserved. Prost!
