Description: In the true heart of winter, leaving the warm surroundings of your home or local and braving the chilly night air is a tall order indeed – never fear, the 4.6% session brown ale is here! Everyone has loved Brownville Brown over the past few years. Usually brewed near the end of winter, it was one last dark fling before spring. This year, we decided to employ some of our favourite brewing techniques, both old school and new to produce a slightly different brown ale. Typically brown ales are malty beers; “Jack” is no exception. We have combined New Zealand ale malt with a variety of specialty malts to deliver a soft, creamy ale, which can be enjoyed repeatedly due to its lower alcohol levels. We also paid homage to the original English brown ales by using classic English Ale yeast, which delivers earthy, fruity undertones. This classic base was then ‘hopbacked’ – a method that involves steeping whole hop cones in hot water at the end of the boil, imparting a juicy, floral hop aroma in the finished beer. Tipping our hats to the famous Sierra Nevada Brewery – we utilised a wonderfully ‘new school’ technique – the hop torpedo. This involves pushing the finished beer through a holding tank of luscious American hops until the desired level of hop aroma and flavour is achieved. So there we have it; one of the best old world styles, combined with modern brewing ingenuity to deliver a complex, malty but aromatic session brown ale – a Jack Of All Trades.
