Description: PLEASE NOTE: This beer is only available in the UK. Please ensure you are checking into the correct beer. This version of the beer is a CASK only version, exclusively brewed in the UK for the J D Wetherspoons Real Ale Festival. Caledonian recently welcomed father and son, Keith and Shaun Standeaven from Standeaven Brewery, based just outside Durban in South Africa. The resulting beer is called Standeaven African Pale Ale and is brewed exclusively for the JD Wetherspoon Beer Festival. Naturally budding brewer Shaun was insistent on using South African hops for the brew. However whilst sending boxes of hops on a flight to Edinburgh may seem straightforward, there are of course certain protocols in import and hops are not the things you would wish a custom’s officer to open up in front of you and say … ‘Now then Sir…’. However enter the blessed hop merchant Charles Faram, who worked with both Standeaven and Caledonian feverishly to bring what we consider to be the first batch of South African Hops for brewing in the UK. The hop itself is called Southern Promise which is renowned for its dual properties. Southern Promise offers great bittering but smooth flavours and aromas which have earthy and woody qualities, along with floral and fruit notes. We think it’s a UK first, unless you know better!
