Description: The first of our three Jubilee beers (see Kohinoor and Canberra), commemorating the anniversary of Princess Elizabeth’s accession to the throne – when she and the Duke of Edinburgh were staying at the Treetops safari lodge in Kenya. This beer is based on a classic dry export stout (using roasted malts and barley) but as with all the beers in this series it is enhanced by the addition of interesting ingredients from the Commonwealth. In this particular case we have used Sorghum Syrup, roasted Millet and toasted Yams! Then in the copper we add ground Kenyan coffee and Madagascan Vanilla pods to round off the experience. This year however we’ve sourced a new ground Kenyan coffee with hints of raspberry and a melon-like fruit and a strong chocolate finish. The coffee beans are grown at the Karuthi washing station in the Nyeri region of Kenya a few miles down the road from the Treetops hotel. Karuthi is operated by the Othaya Farmer’s Cooperative Society which has been producing coffee in that area since 1952 when the Queen ascended to the throne at Treetops. The result is an intense stout with a distinct coffee and vanilla aroma making this a very distinctive beer.
